We are also happy to have TAKE on Art as our Media Partner for this event.

The theme of the discussion is Wanted: Conversation on Photo Festivals. Festivals are exceptional moments where both art and public meet eye-to eye and in fairly large numbers and forms. Today, the photography festival is on an upswing in India, very central to a number of programmes that form part of many photography initiatives. To name a few, Delhi Photo Festival, Mumbai Focus Festival, Madurai International Photography Festival, People’s Foto Festival and many alike are observed in different cities around India with many more being planned.

This new but powerful and forward movement necessitates the creation of a critical dialogue about understanding this emerging concept of the photography festival and also to analyze the value base behind a range of different interpretations. What is the role such festivals play in nurturing new photographic talent, especially locally? How are emerging photographers benefiting from such festivals? How sustainable are these festivals economically in the long run? Should the festivals remain open and free or can they charge for certain things? What are the festivals doing right? What can be improved? How are the audiences reacting to such festivals? The invited speakers will share their experiences in initiating and organizing festivals in the art and photography world, which will be followed by an open discussion with everyone present.

The WANTED SERIES is an interaction conceived and organised by Goa Center for Alternative Photography (Goa-CAP) and Aksgar in collaboration with Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan, where prominent editors, curators and publishers from the art, photography and media world will discuss critical issues on photography in an informal setting. This is a discussion series which travels to different cities in India. You can read more about the Wanted Series here.

The previous events under this Series were held in New Delhi and Mumbai, which you can read about here and here.
